I was interviewed by Riadh Bahri of the VRT 'Laat' news (in Dutch) about yesterday's impressive launch "show" of NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and Lockheed Martin's supersonic X-59. Main #takeaways :👉 #supersonic flying is not new. It is currently only used for military purposes, except for the Concorde launched in the early 70s, a technical tour de force but a complete financial failure.👉 The X-59's most significant and impressive technical #breakthrough is the significantly reduced 'boom' when breaking the sound barrier. While the Concorde produced about 105db (sound of a passing ambulance), the X-59 produces "only" 75db (a hoover), allowing it to fly supersonic overland. The Concorde was previously not permitted by many countries to do so.👉 I am not convinced that flying at 55,000 feet at Mach 1.5 will not have worse effects on #fuelconsumption and #atmospheric #impact than the current aircraft types. During the last decades #aircraftmanufacturers and #airlines successfully focused on reducing #operationalcosts, #fuelconsumption and #emissions. The new Airbus and Boeing aircraft types even fly at a lower cruise speed than the B707 and early 747s demonstrating that increased speed is not of the essence.👉 When the X-59's technology would be applied to a civil aircraft type, supersonic flying might be a #nichemarket product on several routes, like #paris and #london to #newyork, #newyork to #losangeles, #hongkong to #singapore and some routes out of #dubai allowing same day return for time-conscious business travellers. 👉 It will be challenging to make a viable #businessmodel out of an aircraft flying about twice as fast as the current aircraft, slower than the Concorde, but probably with a lower comfort level for the premium passengers. However, some airlines might consider to buy it to create a prestige product like the Concorde previously was for British Airways and Air France. 👉 I see mainly #military use for this aircraft as its operational characteristics could be very useful for the military. For civil purposes the huge R&D investments might have been a waste of money which could have been spent better elsewhere to improve #aircraft #efficiency.University of Antwerp - Faculty of Business and EconomicsAntwerp Management SchoolDepartment of Transport and Regional Economics TPRC-MAT - MSc in Maritime/Air Transport Management

Building the #1 career transitions platform | Board Infinity

I did my 100th flight for the year.3 digit flights numbers are usually hit by pilots, cabin crew, cross country F1 racers.Traveled more this year than what I did entire last decade. My team and our experts who teach also went through a similar experience - true hybridisation :)I traveled around 150 days to meet around 500 higher education stakeholders across 30 cities and towns in India. By far the most mind expanding phase - a jazz concert of different locations, languages, people, views and opportunities.Made a lot of strong friends, well wishers and clients for Board Infinity.Sharing some of my key learnings - A well run higher education institution is a 40%+ EBITDA business- Leadership at the top defines the real impact with respect to student outcomes in higher education- 3 categories of institutions - corporate house driven, politically well connected founders and academician founders- Academician founders are a special breed - they typically build the most balanced systems . Right scale and student outcomes, capacity building investments, technology investments, lesser acquisition costs- Everyone has their own view into employability - but there is hardly a unified view across institutions and we need to build this urgently- Everyone would like to emulate what others do, especially what the top ones are doing- that ways some unification is happening - Today’s students are more and more transactional (outcome oriented) vs transformational - all that matters is what package, role I will get vs personal development goals. ( rather than complaining about it let us adapt )- Capacity building (# of teachers available ) is the biggest challenge according to me in higher education- The second generation promoters (mostly US educated) are the next line of visionaries within the systems- The remotest parts of India have some of the best institutions - they might be less marketed but they are the actual game changers - making an average student become good and great vs self selection colleges which get the cream of the students All this narrative around quality in Indian colleges being poor and hence employability is not there is just a rudimentary and incorrect view about the problem; if you as an entrepreneur really want to solve employability challenges at scale at entry level , then go and try working within the higher ed system as well as outside. In this entire process, couple of things happened- We served the largest cohort of students this year (more than 30,000 a single academic year in last 11 months)- Employment market is tough this year but trying our best to get our clients and friends opportunities through our employer network- Emerged as the #1 and dominant L&D player in management category in the NIRF 100 list PS: this is me celebrating my 100th flight airborne with the crew members :D
